Triptych

First, three friends and I were on a city sidewalk during the day looking up at the brownstones across the street.  I pointed to the third floor apartment and said, “I want to live there someday.”

Next, I was in that apartment, my apartment, hosting a crowded joyous holiday party.   As everyone (including the three from part 1) enjoyed themselves, I happily crawled around on the floor, in and out of furniture and legs, gathering up the scores of fall leaves on the floor and tossing them off of the balcony outside.

Finally, I was back on the sidewalk at night with my three friends.  It was a beautiful starry night and a brilliant, colorful holiday parade was going down the street.  I pointed up at a third floor apartment across the street and said, “I used to live there.”
